Mindful Connections Group
DBT/ACT
The outpatient mental health groups facilitated by Lori Steffen, PLMHP, PLCSW, have taken a new name to reflect their evolving content and purpose. They have been given the name Mindful Connections to show that they are based on, but not limited to, mindfulness skills, as well as to reflect the benefits of group therapy.
These groups will still teach or review at least one Dialectal Behavior Therapy (DBT) skill at each session. In addition to mindfulness skills, other modules covered include distress tolerance, emotional regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. Each client, depending on their individual needs, will also still be encouraged to utilize diary cards and behavior chain analysis.
However, where the different DBT skills can flow into the Acceptance and Commitment (ACT) processes, the facilitator will help the group make those connections. This is designed not only to help clients who are seeing an ACT focused individual therapist, but to also give clients additional perspectives to help them develop the psychological flexibility which ACT promotes.
Both (DBT)and (ACT) shift the focus from changing thought content to altering a person's relationship with their internal experiences. DBT emerged from a biosocial model, employing a highly structured regimen of skills training and dialectical philosophy. ACT utilizes a fluid, process-based approach to foster psychological flexibility through values-based action. While ACT emphasizes experiential metaphors and the "observing self," DBT prioritizes a balance of acceptance and change through modules like distress tolerance and emotion regulation. Both share a fundamental commitment to mindfulness as a tool for building a meaningful life.
